Lawmakers redistricting boundaries

State lawmakers are busy revamping their district maps to compensate for population gains and losses. Rep. Wayne Pettigrew, R-Edmond, said the new population target for each district is 34,165, or about 3,000 more than what was required during the last redistricting requirements a decade ago. Edmond’s increasing facilities boosting local tourism
Tourism in Edmond? For sure, says Convention and Visitors Bureau Director Cathy Williams-White. And with a growing number of city hotels and aggressive marketing, more individuals are expected to convene or recreate in this central Oklahoma city. “At this time, large group gatherings must book 16 to 18 months in advance,” Williams-White said, noting, among other reasons, the ease visiting entities can be transported around and the area’s nice scenery. Today Edmond residents and business owners watch as their city blossoms and grows into a retail shopping destination and technological hub. Neil Little, owner of the Edmond Tag Agency, envisions a growth of a different sort. Little, hopes to get help from Edmond residents, businesses, developers and civic clubs in planting several thousand redbud trees in Edmond by the year 2007. Lowe’s plans Edmond store for 2002
Lowe’s announced on April 13 that construction on its new Edmond site soon will get under way. The North Carolina company stated that a 150,000-square-foot Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse on the southwest corner of Second Street and Bryant Avenue is scheduled to open in early 2002. A groundbreaking is scheduled today for Kelley Pointe Plaza at the Kelley Pointe Technology Park in Edmond. The 21,000-square-foot project is located just north of 33rd and Kelly. "Kelley Pointe will be the premier office address for Edmond," said developer Clay T. Farha of B.D. Eddie Enterprises. "After an intensive market study, we concluded the time was right for a Class A office of this type in Edmond. We are pleased that today our planning has become a reality." Advanced Academics named to OTCC Hall of Fame
A total of 34 Oklahoma technology companies were honored at the Oklahoma Technology Commercialization Center inaugural Awards Dinner in Tulsa. Dr. Randy Goldsmith, executive director of the Tech Center, inducted 14 companies into the Oklahoma Technology Commercialization Center's Million Dollar Hall of Fame—Edmond-based Advanced Academics was among those inducted. Additionally, NanoSource Technologies and Advanced Academics, both of Edmond, were honored as qualifiers for the OCAST Technology Business Finance Program. Computer science grads bring home the bacon-most from UCO
According to the latest Census Bureau report, those with a four-year engineering or computer science degree have the highest paying jobs verses other four-year degrees. Computer science and engineering graduates are bringing home upwards in the amount of $4,400 to $4,700 a month. A large amount of the candidates for those types of high paying jobs are coming out of UCO. Not only is UCO the third largest university in the state, but it’s also the top producer of computer science graduates in Oklahoma, according to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education. City may control four downtown corners

Edmond city officials say they need more office space, and it might be found just across the street from city hall. The City of Edmond is expected to begin negotiations soon for the Bank ONE building at First and Littler streets, which closed Dec. 8. The University of Central Oklahoma may be the largest of the Regional Universities in Oklahoma, but UCO is the least funded. There are many reasons why it is important to correct this issue. One of the most important factors for Edmond residents to see is UCO students often stay in Edmond after they graduate.
