THE BUSINESS BEAT
City firm, Hough institute to study gene remediation
NanoBioMagnetics Inc. will be collaborating with the Office of Naval Research and the Hough Ear Institute to explore gene remediation – correcting deficiencies in cellular structures, whereby a gene can be delivered that will cause the cells to correct themselves if there’s a defect. The purpose of the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement is to evaluate and assess the impact of magnetically responsive nanoparticles in applications to improve or repair hearing in the inner ear. According to Charles Seeney, president and CEO of Edmond-based NanoBioMagnetics, his team has been working with Col. Richard Kopke, director of the Spatial Orientation Center, Naval Medical Center San Diego, over the years seeking methods to improve hearing. At the same time, NanoBioMagnetics has been working with the Hough Ear Institute in Oklahoma City to explore applications of nanotechnology to hearing. ON CAMPUS
Common Ground: UCO celebrates "oneness" with Edmond
It took little more than a year after Edmond was populated before the University of Central Oklahoma was established, Dec. 20, 1890. While both were relatively small and less significant in the “big-state” picture until around the 1950s, the community and the university grew up together, maintaining, for the most part, a symbiotic relationship for more than a century, as each has continued to grow. “Now you’ve got a city that’s somewhere in the 80,000-people range and a university in the almost 16,000-student range,” said Steve Kreidler, UCO vice president of administration and finance. “And we have a very strong partnership. It’s not ‘them and us,’ there’s just ‘us.’” Courtesy of The Journal Record, February 19, 2004.

MIDCON & UCO to sponsor Disaster Recovery seminar
Statistics prove that it is not a matter of IF it will happen, but WHEN it will happen. Unfortunately many companies are not prepared for a disastrous event. Structural damage is always an uncontrollable concern during tornado season, especially in Oklahoma, but what about data loss? If you haven't recovered your critical data within 72 hours, will you be able to remain in business? Edmond-based MIDCON Inc. and The University of Central Oklahoma are sponsoring a seminar on eye-opening disaster recovery issues and practical business continuity planning from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 26 in the Will Rogers room in the Nigh University Center at the University of Central Oklahoma. Cost of the seminar is $29 and includes a continental breakfast and lunch. Limited seating available, please register online at www.midcondata.com or call (405) 478-1234.
