City Council approves OSBI land purchase

A $950,000 plan to buy 6 acres of property along Second Street for a proposed OSBI Forensics Lab was recently approved by a 4-1 Edmond City Council vote. A year ago the council spent $743,000 for 5 acres next door to the Ramada Plaza Hotel, which also is across the street from the University of Central Oklahoma campus. The proposal calls for the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to provide $500,000, UCO to give $250,000 and the city another $200,000 for the 6 acres. When the first 5 acres was purchased, the city and UCO heralded the plan with the OSBI as a way to bring national attention to Edmond as well as UCO's criminal justice program. This will be the main laboratory for the OSBI's investigations in addition to serving as a learning lab for UCO students. Officials said this will be a premier facility of its type in the nation. City Attorney Steve Murdock said the finalization of the purchase and agreements may not happen until late fall. Courtesy of The Edmond Sun, July 13, 2004.

DOWNTOWN DISPATCH

Redeveloping downtown around the trees

For downtown Edmond business owners, the one thing that may be considered as lovely as a tree is a steady flow of customers during the extensive streetscape renovation currently under way. Downtown Edmond is known for its trees, which are given special prominence in the new streetscape design. But the most important component of the construction process is coordination with local business owners, according to the project designers and city officials. Furthermore, a group of business owners have created an ongoing promotion to ensure that customers will continue to visit those businesses affected by the construction.
