UCO program to promote “global understanding” on campus
The University of Central Oklahoma is planning a major event for Monday, Oct. 22, to involve the university’s international students, U.S. students, faculty, staff and the citizens of Edmond. The event, called “UCO’s World Within: Campus Friendships for Global Understanding,” will launch an ongoing initiative to establish a new level of relationships among international and U.S. students and the Edmond community. The on-campus event begins at 2:30 p.m. At that time, participating UCO students will receive the name of their new campus brother or sister, and their new “Edmond family.” Then at 3 p.m., the new “families” will come together to share a meal. The event will also include music and pageantry, and will feature an Olympics-style opening ceremonial procession comprised of students carrying the flags of all 107 countries represented on the UCO campus. For more information or to register, call (405) 974-5060, or, online registration and information can be obtained at www.ucok.edu/worldwithin. Courtesy of The Edmond Sun, October 14, 2001.

The Business Patch

Trained for security
Developing a secure work space is not merely hiring armed guards around the perimeter and the lobby of a building. Instead, it’s a complicated web of issues, each of which needs to be addressed to provide security for workers, inventory, customers, visitors and, most important, data. So says Jeffrey K. Jenkins, regional representative for Technical Innovative Concepts, an Edmond-based security company that has something most others don’t offer – government-trained agents. The Gourmet Gallery opens in Kickingbird Square
This summer, the Edmond Farmer's Market served as an "incubator" for several local merchants. One in particular grew up to be a retail establishment in Kickingbird Square Shopping Center at Danforth and Bryant. Partners Janet McDonald, Cindy Utecht and Sally Scott opened The Gourmet Gallery two weeks ago following a successful summer of marketing their private label food products and corporate gift baskets at the farmer's market. On Campus

OC’s wireless campus attracting curiosity
Congressman Ernest Istook recently took a first-hand look at Oklahoma Christian University's new wireless campus and said he came away impressed. "I think it's terrific for the students, I think it's terrific for the school and for the state," Istook said after meeting with university officials for a guided tour around Oklahoma Christian's "e-campus." Oklahoma Christian launched its wireless campus with the beginning of the fall 2001 semester, distributing IBM ThinkPads with wireless Internet to every full-time student. It is the first university in Oklahoma and one of the few nationwide that offer to all students a wireless campus and laptop computers. Students can access the Internet or myOC, the university’s personalized, web-based portal, from virtually anywhere on campus, even outside in the Forum. Courtesy of The Edmond Sun, October 10, 2001.

City Spot

Arts find a home in Edmond
Mechanisms are now in place for Edmond to add more public art to its streets and city buildings. The Edmond City Council unanimously approved the Art in Public Places program by creating a new ordinance. The idea is that public art will make Edmond a standout in the state and signify to visitors that the city puts a high priority on its quality of life. Public art can range from statues like the new one of Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller behind the Edmond Public Library to community murals, fountains and even stained glass. No city funds have been earmarked for the project and no first piece of artwork has been selected, but the council’s action Monday laid the groundwork for those things to happen.
