EEDA plays role in Corning Fiber Plant
There was some really great economic news announced on Dec. 18 by the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce. During a press conference, they announced that Corning would construct a new fiber plant in the Oklahoma City area. The plant site is approximately 200 acres at Reno and Sara Road on the west side of Oklahoma City. In fact, the site is actually located in Canadian County. So why is this such an important piece of economic news for Edmond?

On CampusUCO to open new cyber café and coffee bar
The University of Central Oklahoma Auxiliary Enterprises will hold a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to introduce Lakeside Café.com, the new cyber café and coffee bar in the University Center. The ceremony will take place on Thursday, January 11, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. on the second floor of the University Center (food court area).
OCAST approves $2.4 million in projects—UCO to receive a portion
The Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology has approved more than $2.4 million for 11 high-tech projects in the area and six high-tech internship programs at local colleges. The projects involve medicine, communications, manufacturing, agribusiness and computer software. The University of Central Oklahoma was awarded $290,315 over a three-year period to improve the effectiveness of photo dynamic immuno therapy, for the treatment of metastatic tumors, by optimizing the treatment procedures and to understand its immunological mechanism. Retail Details
Retail sales remain high in Edmond
While nationwide taxable retail sales are up about 3 percent for 2001, Edmond continues to prosper well above that figure, at about 8 percent, according to recently published Edmond Economic Development Authority figures. "This shows the strong retail sales we have in Edmond," said Steve Kreidler, the executive director of EEDA, commenting on the city's more than $700 million in retail sales through November.*Courtesy of The Edmond Sun, December 20, 2000.

Through an informal survey, retail sales skyrocketed this holiday season for Edmond bricks and mortars stores that also have a strong Web presence. However, holiday online sales doubled nationwide, which is something definitely to watch for next year.
Online holiday shopping doubled this year from 1999 levels as sales surged in the first week of November and remained buoyant, according to a study Tuesday. The picture of a robust e-commerce sector was reflected by Yahoo!, the world's most visited portal on the World Wide Web, which said order volumes at its shopping services was nearly twice as big as year-ago levels. *Courtesy of The Journal Record, December 27, 2000.

EEDA to reveal findings of retail study
The Edmond Economic Development Authority recently conducted and completed a sales tax analysis of the city of Edmond. The study tracks retail SIC codes for the past five years in Edmond. The analysis shows trends and gaps in the different SIC code categories for Edmond’s city limits and will allow the EEDA and others to precisely identify and recruit prime retailers to fill particular niches in our city.
The EEDA will release the study findings and make the report available at the 2001 Economic Preview sponsored by The Edmond Economic Development Authority and American Bank & Trust.
