Benefits of shopping locally include lower sales taxes
Sales during the months of November and December typically account for 20 percent to 40 percent of a retailer's annual sales volume, according to the National Retail Federation. Edmond's Mayor Saundra Naifeh is encouraging Edmond residents to spend those shopping dollars in their own community. Among the reasons she's outlining is the fact that sales taxes are less in Edmond than in other metro area cities where shoppers might be inclined to drop their holiday dollars. Retail spending shows cozy Christmas ahead
This Christmas shopping season may be warm and cozy due to the number of home-related gifts predicted to be purchased this season. The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) predicts that shoppers will be focused on the comforts of home and family during this holiday season due to the national economic slow down and the recent terrorism and current military action. "We expect Edmond to fair better than both national and statewide trends this season. Our retailers are reporting larger than normal crowds with sales better than expected during the first official holiday shopping weekend. That said, the deciding factor of a successful season could be the final week before Christmas," said Janet Yowell, interim director of the Edmond Economic Development Authority.
